This week’s installment of WV Top 3 takes us to Lost River State Park located in Mathias, West Virginia. This park has a TON of hiking trails to offer, one of them offering the most beautiful view we’ve ever seen. Today we are hiking to Cranny Crow Overlook, checking out the Lee Cabin and Museum, and staying in one of the rustic cabins!
Hike to Cranny Crow Overlook
You guys, seriously I cannot put into words the view from this overlook. We have hiked across most of the state of West Virginia and have never seen anything like this. It’s a steep trek to the top, but I promise it’s worth every drop of sweat. Start off on White Oak (1.5 miles) and connect to Miller’s Rock (less than .25 mile) to get to the overlook. Take in the breathtaking panoramic view of five counties; Read through the messages left by other hikers. Be sure to (carefully!) snap a selfie before heading back down off the mountain. If you post your selfie, be sure to tag us (#babylifeadventures) so that we can see and enjoy your experiences as well! If you don’t want to hike up the mountain check out the horse stables, they offer guided horseback riding!
Visit the Lee Cabin and Museum
If visiting the park during their open season, Memorial Day to Labor Day, stop by and tour the Lee Cabin and Museum. It was the Summer Home to Henry Lee who was a General in the Revolutionary War and Father to Civil War General Robert E. Lee. Check out the Lee Sulphur Spring across from the cabin. The springs were once a tourist attraction itself and rumored to have healing properties.
Stay in a Rustic Cabin
Don’t let the name fool you, they may be called “Rustic Cabins,” but they still offer all the modern amenities. In these cabins, you’ll find electricity, running water, a hot shower, microwave, stove, refrigerator, and coffee pot! Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the park opened to the public in 1937. Nestled in the same forest the cabin’s hand cut logs and rocks were harvested packs them full history and wonder.
We found that enjoying a cold refreshing drink at the picnic table while grilling up a delicious meal was the perfect way to rest and recharge after our hike to Cranny Crow!
Thanks for coming along and enjoying our third stop on our WV Top 3 Adventure!
This WV Top 3 Adventure was an extra special one for us because it was my 32nd birthday! I think it’s safe to say I won’t be forgetting it anytime soon. That overlook alone was enough to make it memorable, the entire weekend at the park made it unforgettable. Thank you, Chris, for taking me all over this gorgeous state, for sharing this life of adventure with me. I love you more than you will ever know!
