This week on WV Top 3 we are heading to Berkley Springs, West Virginia to explore Cacapon State Park.  Cacapon is one of WV’s largest state parks coming in at just over 6,000 acres and has tons to offer! Enjoy the lake by swimming, kayaking, fishing, canoe and peddle boat rentals.  Hike or drive to the Cacapon Mountain Overlook which boasts a clear day view of West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Explore the park via bike or horseback! Don’t let the fact that this is one of WV’s largest parks intimidate you, speed up your exploration by renting a bike or get adventurous and saddle up a horse!

Cacapon Lake offers a variety of ways to spend your day on the water! There is a beach swimming area with a snack bar offering sandwiches, pizza, ice cream and drinks. Bring your kayak, rent a canoe or peddle boat and get out on the water. Maybe fishing is more your style? Cacapon Resort State Park offers not one, but two small lakes for fishing. Both are stocked each spring with trout, but bass, catfish, and bluegill can also be caught.

Located at the top of Cacapon Mountain is an overlook that boasts a view of four states on a clear day, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. If you’re feeling up to a challenge, it is possible to hike to the overlook! There are a few parking/starting options, but we found it most accessible to park at the Middle Fork Cabin Area. The trail winds up from the base of the mountain to the highest elevation in the eastern panhandle at 2,200 feet! It’s about a 5-mile loop with the rugged and steep terrain. If you’re feeling like a more relaxing trip to the top, you can also drive through the park and get there in a matter of minutes!

Explore the Park via Bike or Horseback

Explore the park by renting a bike or by horseback!

Want to explore the park without spending all day on foot? They offer bike rentals and horseback riding! Mountain switchbacks and varied terrain reward you with stirring, sky-high wilderness views. You can also ride on paved roads throughout the park. Looking to get in touch with nature a little more closely? Cacapon Resort offers guided horseback riding for guests. Riders who aren’t as experienced may choose to ride a pony instead. Forget dinner and a movie when you can have dinner and a horseback ride through the moonlight with your loved ones!

As always, we hope you’ve enjoyed this edition of WV Top 3 as we explored Cacapon State Park!
